The calendar for the 2010-11 school year was approved last week by the Colorado Springs School District 11 board, but not before the perennial Thanksgiving break question was raised.

Board members Charlie Bobbitt and Bob Null questioned why the district wasn’t giving a full week off at Thanksgiving.

Deputy Superintendent Mary Thurman said the calendar committee always discusses Thanksgiving break, but adding two days of vacation then means it must find two other days to hold classes. However, tiffany bangles, she acknowledged that "it is time. We’re one of only a few districts that have only three days off."

She said staff absenteeism is higher on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Average daily absenteeism for the district’s 4,000 employees is about 300 and on those days it averages about 500, she said.

The board approved the calendar on a 6-1 vote with Null opposing.

Last year, 10 of the region’s 17 districts had classes off for the full week. Not all districts have approved or posted their 2010-11 calendars, but there’s already been a couple of switches.

According to calendars posted on their websites, Cheyenne Mountain School District 12 joined the full-week Thanksgiving break group and Falcon School District 49 left the group, scheduling a Wednesday through Friday break that week.

D-49 starts school in early August and takes two-week breaks in October, December and March.

Most of the region’s 16 other districts start class in mid-August and have a two-week winter break and one week off in March.

In other action at its meeting Wednesday, the D-11 board approved $524,000 for three bond projects. They are: $174,tiffany,000 for a replacement server and software for the district-wide library system; $150,tiffany bracelets,000 to replace two failing heating and ventilation units at Doherty High School, and $200,000 to replace boilers at Edison Elementary School.

The projects, recommended by a citizen oversight committee, were picked from a list of unfunded capital improvements to be paid for with part of the money remaining in the bond fund. The $152 million bond program was approved by voters in 2004 to pay for certain projects, and has been stretched to pay for additional projects.

All bond moneys must be used by the end of the year under IRS rules. As of April 1, the fund had nearly $1.2 million remaining.

The board also had discussion on:

–A proposal to change some benefits in its employee health care plan to cover an anticipated $2 million increase in claims in the next three years. The most controversial portion of proposal would increase the annual deductibles, tiffany pendants, a move opposed by educational support professionals. The board is expected to vote on the proposed changes on April 28.

–A request from the Colorado Springs Vocational Academy to take its proposal for a charter school to the Colorado Charter School Institute for authorization. The charter school group last year submitted a proposal to D-11 but withdrew it after the administration noted shortcomings in the plan recommended the board deny it. Several board members indicated they would prefer that the organizers reapply to D-11, but organizers said the CSI timeline was earlier and would give the school more time to prepare for a June 2011 opening. The request for permission to seek state approval will be voted on April 28.

A lawyer, representing an Emirati policeman accused of kidnapping and raping a woman inside his car, told a court on Tuesday that the charges are baseless.

Youssef Hammad told Presiding Judge of the Court of First Instance Al Saeed Bargouth that the Emirati woman alleged that she was raped to force his client to marry her.

"She devised a plan to go with him and pretended that she was raped. However, the truth is otherwise. She had gone with him willingly and had sex with him also willingly but she is lying to make my client marry her," Hammad argued. He requested the court to modify the charge from rape to consensual sex.

Hammad also filed a request that the case file be returned to the Public Prosecution to frame charges of having illicit sex against the alleged victim.

The defendant, tiffany bangles, 21,tiffany earrings, is facing charges of kidnap, rape, and molestation.

The Emirati woman, 20, alleged during the Public Prosecution investigation that her compatriot threatened her if she did not go out with him, tiffany rings, he would kill her. She went out of her house in Rashidiya on September 29 last year, tiffany pendants, parked her car somewhere and went along with him in his car.

Hammad told the court that the woman left her home that day fully prepared to have sex with his client.

"She herself had admitted that she was wearing only undergarments and the abaya. She went out without informing the police or at least her parents," the lawyer said.

She alleged that while he was raping her in his car in a residential area in Muhaisnah, an Emirati man came and knocked on the window. "She claimed that the defendant who was lying on top of her moved away after a brief conversation with that passer-by. That time, she did not scream for help," Hammad argued.

In her statement, she said he then drove to another location where he molested her again as she got stuck between the seats. "She is very fat. How could she fit in that place? Her claims that she was molested after being suddenly pushed into the back seat are also doubtful considering her size," Hammad added.

This could be the year that Earthtec outerwear makes a name for itself, tiffany cuff Links, and helps save landfill space in the process.

It’s been three years since the offshoot of parent firm Trailtex started creating clothing out of recycled plastic. It estimates each fleece jacket, for instance, is made from 12 used water bottles that won’t be sent to a landfill.

After gradually adding styles each year, a full collection of Earthtec vests and jackets is available and on display in its showroom on West Road. The firm plans an aggressive marketing campaign.

It will continue to sell to retailers such as the Kittery Trading Post, but hopes to focus on direct online sales to customers through its earth-tec.com website.

"We were making very little noise with this but now we’re ready to launch it in a big way," said Dennis Randall, Trailtex CEO.

The most recent marketing effort for the Earthtec label was a new partnership with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats baseball team. Staff will wear Earthtec black fleece jackets with the Fisher Cats logo at games. Other promotional items are planned.

Last month, tiffany, Earthtec hats were handed out at a University of New Hampshire hockey game.

Randall has been in the textile business for years and since founding Trailtex has been making traditional outerwear for other companies since 2002. This includes many big-name brands such as Quicksilver and Roxie.

It has sold the clothing for 10 years at its The Warehouse factory stores next to company headquarters on West Road and in North Conway.

Now Randall wants to fully develop the Earthtec brand and thinks the time is right for an environmentally friendly quality clothing line that is competitively priced.

"We can make a substantial difference in what goes into a landfill," he said.

Other firms have made clothes from recycled ingredients in the past. But Randall said the quality often suffered because it was difficult to separate out impurities from recycled plastic.

They also often were not cost competitive.

Randall has found business partners in China who can successfully turn used plastic into clean yarn. His company also has consolidated the clothing manufacturing process so it’s all done in one place.

Traditionally, different functions were done at different plants, tiffany bracelets, such as dye the fabric in one location, but cut and sew in another location.

This has reduced costs and maintained quality control. The only thing that is made in another location now is the yarn.

"What we’ve done is to be vertical. We do it all under one roof," said Randall.

The finished clothes are shipped to Los Angeles and will be distributed to several locations nationwide where orders will be filled.

Earthtec employs 15-18 people in the U.S. and six to seven in its Shanghai office.

There now are 25 different styles of both men’s and women’s outerwear ready for sale.

Sarah Brown, project director of the Portsmouth-based Green Alliance, said Earthtec is tapping into the green market in an enviable way.

"It’s fashionable and made from recycled materials that we can all relate to. The fact that there’s this great line of clothing that makes use of waste that we’re all generating is really cool," said Brown.

"They’re thinking out of the box, and in this economy you’ve got to have a differentiator and this is what they’re doing."

Brown’s group has 85 member businesses and she said the dilemma for green companies is creating products that also are affordable. Earthtec has managed to do this, she said, and is a shining example of a successful green company.

She points out she wears an Earthtec jacket, tiffany bangles, purchased before the firm even joined the Alliance.

Earthtec clothes can be found at The Warehouse stores at 140 West Road in Portsmouth, and 1675 White Mountain Highway in North Conway. Or visit www.earth-tec.com and www.warehouseclothing.com.

As back-to-school season approaches, I’m getting ready to hit the stores for the latest fashions for my 4-year-old daughter. Sort of. While everyone else shops for cute fall outfits, I’ll be skimming the clearance racks, picking up tank tops, shorts, bathing suits and sundresses … all for next year.

While off-season shopping works like a charm for little kids without strong opinions, I’ll admit that teenagers might not let you get away with this. That said, if you steer clear of anything too trendy and think of the basics, tiffany pendants, you might have luck convincing them.

Shopping ahead for adults is relatively easy, tiffany bangles, but buying a year ahead of time for growing kids can be a challenge. Here are a few tips:

– Think about wardrobe basics. While you might not want to guess your kids’ shoe sizes a year ahead, items like jeans, khaki pants, tiffany rings, T-shirts and jackets can cross seasons and be worn as your kids grow into them. They might even last you a few years.

– When in doubt, go a size bigger. Clothes shrink. If something is way too big, you can always put it away another few months or save it for the following year. If you’ve totally missed the mark, tiffany cuff Links, you can re-sell or consign.

– If you find a can’t-miss deal on shoes, consider styles like tennis shoes that can be worn year-round. If you’re a Crocs fan, you’ll find them to be flexible since they tend to span two kids’ sizes (toddler 8/9).

– Stock up. If you find an amazing deal on jeans or socks, consider buying enough for two years, especially if your kids are little.

– Color coordinate and mix and match. Once you have the basics (denim and khakis), pick a few color families (we like pink, purple and blue) and stick with them. Get a good mix of patterns and solids so you can pair different shirts and bottoms.

– Be wary of bright yellow shorts. I once bought a pair of neon yellow shorts for my daughter because they were $1, and I never did find anything that looked right with them. They only cost me a dollar, but it was a dollar I wasted.

– Keep an eye on quality. Cheap is good, but look for items that will hold up.

– Wait until the end of the season, but don’t wait too long or you won’t find anything that matches. By late July or early August, most stores are putting out back-to-school clothes for the fall and moving summer merchandise to the clearance racks. Start looking for winter clothes in February/March, when spring lines arrive.

– Shop after the holidays. You might find a beautiful Easter dress for $3 like we did!

– Search for deep discounts. You should be able to find baby/toddler items for as low as $1-$3 each and kids’ separates for $2-$4 each. I found a London Fog winter coat for my daughter at Burlington last summer for just $9!

– Don’t forget your coupons. Most stores allow them on clearance items, so sign up for your favorite stores’ mail and e-mail lists. Happy sales!

A 23-year-old transient was arrested Wednesday on warrants stemming from an incident in May in which he is accused of beating and burning his girlfriend after she tried to leave their motel room.

Pasco County sheriff’s deputies said Casey Lee Cantrell, who drifts from home to home, tiffany bracelets, met the 19-year-old mother of his 1-year-old child at the Twilite Motel, 4040 Gall Blvd., on May 11. He asked her to go to a party with him at his friend’s home, but she declined, a sheriff’s office report states.

At 3 a.m. on May 12, Cantrell returned "drunk and high on something," and asked the girlfriend to take a shower, the report says. She refused and Cantrell grew angry, accusing her of cheating on him, according to the report.

It says a fight ensued, and she tried to leave.

He stopped her, hit her face, pushed her to the ground, tiffany rings, wrapped a towel around his fist, tiffany key rings, and punched her in the chest and face, the report alleges.

Deputies said Cantrell went outside, got a baseball bat out of his car, hit her buttocks with it and then held her down on the bed, burning her stomach with a cigarette.

Deputies said Cantrell tore a metal towel rack off the bathroom wall, heated it and burned the woman’s thigh.

The woman screamed, but no one came to help, tiffany bangles, the report states.

Later that morning, she told deputies, Cantrell calmed down and apologized to her. He drove her to his sister’s house and when the woman told her what happened, the sister took her to a battered women’s shelter and she was referred to law enforcement.

Deputies arrested Cantrell on Wednesday when he was pulled over for speeding at U.S. 41 and Ehren Cutoff in Land O’ Lakes.

He was being held at the Land O’ Lakes Jail on charges of aggravated battery and false imprisonment with bail set at $75,000.

Is it possible the way we look could work against us? Crazy world.

– — –

I was reading Dahlia Lithwick in Newsweek this week and she was making a case the "not-so-perfect-people" were being discriminated against.

Her column began:

"If you are anything like me, you left the theater after ‘Sex and the City 2′ and thought, there ought to be a law against a looks-based culture in which the only way for 40-year-old actresses to be compensated like 40-year-old actors is to have them look and dress like the teenage daughters of 40-year-old actors. You can’t even look at Sarah Jessica Parker without longing to feed her croissants."

Lithwick went on to discuss a new book, tiffany cuff Links, "The Beauty Bias," which essentially says the nonbeautiful are being discriminated against.

Restaurants, for example, tiffany bangles, that serve hot wings shouldn’t be allowed to fire a waitress for being a couple of pounds overweight.

Fair enough. My bad looks shouldn’t cost me a job.

– — –

But then I hear about a Village Voice story. It reports that a woman is claiming she was fired because she is too pretty.

That’s correct! Debrahlee Lorenzana says, quite simply, she was too good looking.

So she’s filed a lawsuit.

Dang. It sounds to me like we’ve got trouble if we are on either end of the pretty meter.

I guess we’re better off finding that vast, bland middle ground.

– — –

Speaking of the bland middle ground (love the segue) we had a great discussion this week about our unscientific Web polls. And I should say up front, if you hate them, blame me. I’ve written all of them so far.

A few folks here feel like they’re a bit too edgy, sort of borderline controversial. Fair opinion.

But is that so bad?

Look, media companies have a bunch of challenges to overcome: Fewer people reading, competing Internet, a greater distribution of ad dollars, etc.

We should always be fair and accurate but we should do so — when appropriate — with just a little edge.

Our poll has asked questions about politicians, the establishment, governmental salaries and sports. So what if it’s edgy? That’s my argument.

A month-to-month analysis of our poll shows huge growth since it began early this year. It has more than doubled in page views. So we plan to add more soon. The new ones might not be as edgy, but we believe folks are interested in voicing their opinions in a poll.

– — –

Speaking of opinions (another marginally sweet segue) how ’bout those Chicago Blackhawks!

Being from Chicago, tiffany rings, I enjoyed watching them whip Philadelphia in the Stanley Cup this week. And they finished them off over at their joint to boot.

I was a little surprised, however, at how those Flyers fans reacted after it was over.

They constantly booed, even through the Cup ceremony. I wondered if the media would cover this unbecoming behavior.

The Philadelphia media basically ignored it. But the Chicago media did not.

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Rick Morrissey said folks in Philadelphia couldn’t do much about the Blackhawks.

"Well, tiffany pendants, (they) could boo, which Flyers fans did loudly as the Hawks carried the Cup around the ice. You can’t teach that kind of classiness. You’re born with it."

Don’t be such homers, Philadelphia media!

The smash-hit American comedy Get him to the Greek stars the British stand-up comedian Russell Brand as a once-famous rock star and alcoholic who must be escorted from London to a vital comeback concert in LA. Charged with this task is a sweet record company minion played by the terrific young American comic Jonah Hill. It appears that Brand – with previously only one major film under his belt, the Judd Apatow hit Forgetting Sarah Marshall , in which he played a similar character – has immediately ascended to the apotheosis of a star’s career: when you seem to be acting yourself, and have a complete-enough personality to carry an entire life on screen.

Brand built his career in the UK as a controversial stand-up and presenter who talked fast and creatively about his drug and sex addiction. In the film his character does this too – lounging on sofas riffing about booze and adultery, his long legs ending in the most delicate of winklepickers, his chest bursting from nipped-in shirts and a hairdo like a Musketeer, curled tenderly around a pulchritudinously astonishing face. And this is Brand’s bag: a man intoxicated with himself, tiffany bangles, who’ll never shut up or stop messing around with east London slang and 19th-century swear words until the world drops its knickers.

Which is precisely what America has done. They’ve embraced Brand there utterly and even recently gave him the Hollywood equivalent of a Pulitzer – the lead in a remake of Arthur (currently filming), to which your reviewer has a two-word response: Dudley Moore. While it’s clear Brand is intriguing and here to stay, he has little of the devastating charm and acting chops of Moore.

In fact Brand does not seem, in this movie anyway, to be responding to the world at all. He doesn’t appear to listen or hear, and whole scenes and important emotional moments involving his character’s supposed rebirth go weirdly by while Brand’s face simply moves through several configurations of blankness. In contrast, the lardy Hill – a trusty in the writer/director Apatow’s stable – has a lovely way of absorbing things. In one scene he falls into a London nightclub with Brand, and slowly, incredulously, takes in the view, his shy eyes suggesting the spirit of a fanfare within him. Unlike Brand, Hill is touching and his presence has meaning.

But what does one do with Russell Brand? How does art deal with such a person? His closest living analogue is Jim Carrey – another elastically talented comic with much physical beauty, tiffany earrings, but, crucially, acting depth and a bona fide oddness that would make him ripe for a David Lynch (I’m still waiting).

Not only could you be forgiven – looking at the poster – for thinking that Woody Allen’s new film Whatever Works had absolutely nothing to do with him, tiffany cuff Links, it seems the film’s distributors actively want us to mistake it for the new Curb Your Enthusiasm DVD boxset, since it features its star Larry David, alone, with absolutely no hint of his character’s context.

In the film David stars as a grouchy NYC chess teacher whose life is disrupted the day he helps a pretty dumb blonde (Evan Rachel Wood) and her naive Southern family. This being an Allen film, the initially misanthropic David must end up softened as a character, and the movie is really just a progression to that sappy point – although David puts up a spirited fight, limping, possessed, down the streets in his ragged trousers bitching about the Nobel prize ("It’s just politics, like any other phoney honour") or imitating Kurtz in Heart of Darkness ("The horror!") or listing all that life has to offer to a late-middle-aged American male, ie Omega 3 addiction, and the day they "put you in a box". There is something a little demeaning in hearing David actually say these kinds of things. In Curb he doesn’t need to: his face alone articulates it all (and worse).

One random thought: Allen may have recently had a devastating encounter with the bedpan. The film is littered with references to pelvic sonograms, colonoscopies, ("They probe me like coal miners . . . !") and at one point features David disappearing into the loo, the belt of his mouldy dressing gown trailing, to the strains of Beethoven’s Fifth as his young girlfriend trips out in sequins to watch a rock band called Anal Sphincter. All of which is amusing enough, and David gives it some welly, but the film’s rallying cry – that love, of any kind (whatever works for you) is the answer – feels knee-jerk. The script may have been first written in the 1970s but has all the weaknesses of the late-period Allen.

But oh the hope . The words "return to form" have been attached to Allen’s films more than to any other director’s in the history of the universe. Bearing in mind he hasn’t made a truly great film since Hannah and her Sister (1992 – that’s 20 films ago) or had a cast-iron hit since Bullets over Broadway (1994), it only goes to show the ravenousness of our hunger. Because it’s not actually Allen’s kvetching and bitching that we worship him for – it was his ability to recreate happiness in the early films, Annie Hall, and Play it Again Sam . Think of Diane Keaton with her jaunty tennis racket, or her delighted gasp when Woody gives her a plastic skunk. Allen showed us better than anyone what the good times really look like. We can’t quite give up on that. We never will.

Two minor films featuring major names – Tetro , by no less than Francis Ford Coppola, and Villa Amalia , starring the hearteningly ageless Isabelle Huppert – are released this week to tellingly little fanfare. Coppola’s – a black-and-white film – follows an American writer and one-time depressive (played by Vincent Gallo) living what looks like a rather delightful creative life in Argentina. In Villa , Huppert plays a pianist retreating from the world and settling in a remote villa on an Italian island. Both films have a rambling, marginal quality and a romantic, perhaps monomaniacal perception of Living One’s Dream. Neither is a joy to get through.

And now to the small matter of the coolest film ever made. Jewel of the French New Wave, made with spit and sawdust and not even proper audio equipment (all the sound was dubbed in later), Breathless gets a 50th anniversary re-release this week and is doing the international rounds in an exquisitely restored new print.

The confidence of the film! The way the camera wheels around its small-time hoodlum star Jean Paul Belmondo, with his sweet spivvy bracelet and ability to lie prone on a bed smoking a whole fag without removing it from his mouth once. "I’m on my way. Hey, hey, tiffany money clips, lalalalalaaalaaa!" he sings to himself and then eyeballs the camera (the shock of that at the time . . . ). In another scene he spots the hairs on the back of Jean Seberg’s neck, momentarily caught by the sun, and lowers his eyes until his own lashes catch the rays: it’s a film that fixes each action in the memory, that thinks everything is touchable.

Even though its characters let each other down, and its director Jean-Luc Godard turned out to have a sour word for everyone (Belmondo included, and he was horribly cutting about his mucker Truffaut too), the movie is so idealistic it breaks the heart. "The worst flaw is cowardice!" it screams, and goes on to demonstrate in frame after frame what it is to be young, and fierce, and convinced that a single lie will curse you forever. Nigel Andrews is away

Police say 16-year-old Michael Trujillo killed 18-year-old Chris Aguayo over a girl.,tiffany key rings

Detective Sgt. Louis Carlos, tiffany bracelets, who is investigating the shooting, said Friday that both boys were acquaintances of the girl, and Trujillo, "being 16 and insecure," became angry at Aguayo.

Trujillo will remain in juvenile jail through the weekend, charged with an open count of murder in Thursday’s fatal shooting in the parking lot of Santa Fe Place mall. He is likely to appear before state District Judge Michael Vigil on Monday, Carlos said.

Police identified the two juveniles at noon Friday, after declining to name either late Thursday. Police Chief Aric Wheeler said his hesitance to release Trujillo’s name was for the protection of his family. Wheeler said he wanted to give Aguayo’s immediate family time to notify the extended family of his death.

But other than the names, police had little new information on the homicide Friday.

Aguayo was shot multiple times with a pistol beside his car on the south side of the mall, near the bus terminal, at 3:40 p.m. Thursday. Another car was seen driving away from the scene, leaving Aguayo bleeding on the pavement.

Empty shell casings were left near the bloodstain, indicating the shots were fired at a close proximity.

Trujillo was stopped driving a car nearby. "During a search of the vehicle a weapon of undisclosed caliber was located inside," says a police news release. "The weapon found is believed to have been used in the commission of the crime."

Aguayo succumbed to his injuries about 6 p.m. Thursday at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center where he had been taken by ambulance.

Neither Trujillo nor Aguayo showed up in routine computer searches of court cases and local news stories. But on his MySpace page, Aguayo posted a photograph of himself with short hair, tiffany rings, a goatee, mustache and soul patch, wearing a medallion on a chain.

"Hate it or love it," he wrote. "Its [sic] just a west side thing." He repeated the phrase several times, tiffany bangles, spelling the last word as "thuging." In recent days he had posted a comment saying he has kept messing up and is "filling [sic] empty in side."

Aguayo’s cousin, Paul Ortiz, 19, told The New Mexican at the crime scene that Aguayo had come to the mall to buy some clothes and that he was going to see a doctor about having a cyst on his arm surgically removed. Ortiz described Aguayo has a "good guy," who lived with his parents, worked regularly and had never been in trouble.

Aguayo’s grandfather, Larry Leyba, told KOB-TV that his grandson was working on a GED, had just gotten his first driver’s license and wanted to be a mechanic and travel the world.

Carlos said he continues to seek more information about the incident from eyewitnesses. He can be reached at 955-5038.

But he described the offences as "a gross breach of trust",tiffany key rings, noting that Dicks came into contact with the girl’s family as a result of her police duties.

Years later she fostered a relationship with the family, allowing her contact with the girl, who was led into "a false belief she was in a legitimate relationship" with Dicks, the judge said.

Dicks, of Forestville in northern Sydney, tiffany bracelets, pleaded guilty to aggravated indecent assault and three counts of sexual intercourse with a child aged between 10 and 14.

Two of the counts related to digital penetration and the third to oral sex.

Judge Toner referred to a "moving and disturbing" victim’s impact statement made by the girl.

"I can only hope the residual effects of the offender’s behaviour on you (the victim) will modify with time, tiffany money clips," he said.

"It is so often characteristic of this kind of offence that there is a fraud of consent.

"In other words, a false belief on the part of the complainant that he or she is in a relationship with the offender.

"It is perhaps that fact which renders a complainant vulnerable to the psychological trauma once the reality is revealed."

The judge accepted that Dicks was remorseful and had excellent prospects of rehabilitation.

He noted that at the time of the offences Dicks had problems with alcoholism, tiffany bangles, chronic major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

"As a police officer she had been exposed to traumatic incidents, which to a large extent were left unaddressed."

Noting her previous occupation and the type of offences, the judge said it was "far from fanciful" to conclude her time in jail would be harsher than for someone not in such a role.

He set a maximum term of four and a half years.
