Beckley Turns Back Clock For Coal Town Christmas
The sights and sounds of an Appalachian Coal Town Christmas tiffany will be celebrated Dec. 4 and 5 in Beckley.
Holiday activities are planned at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and the adjacent Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia.
Visitors will have an opportunity to see how coalfields families celebrated Christmas. Traditional activities include a marshmallow roast, horse-and-wagon rides, singing in the Coal Camp Church and tours of the Mountain Homestead, a restored log home. Five coal camp buildings, including a school, miner’s house and superintendent’s house, also are decorated for the period.
The light festival includes a 15-minute tour through the underground silver bangles exhibition mine.
“It starts out with a biblical theme,” said Executive Director Renda Morris, “and then it has more whimsical displays that the children enjoy.”
Also planned are arts, crafts and food vendors, a toyland adventures exhibit at the museum and appearances by Santa Claus.
The cost is $10 per person for the main event weekend Dec. 4-5. It is $5 per person for the remainder of the tours from Nov. 26 through Dec. 19.
“We want to give the families an activity that they an all do together at Christmas silver rings time,” Morris said.
